HTEP Background

The Hokkaido Teachers of English Program (HTEP) began as an intensive English language, culture and pedagogy immersion for English teachers in Hokkaido in 2001. The program had two major components. The first component takes place in Canada while the second occurs in Japan. HTEP is an initiative taken by the University of Alberta with the Hokkaido Board of Education to provide relevant and specialized training to English language teachers throughout Hokkaido. The project is a cooperative effort between two countries and three institutions: the Department of Alberta Learning; the Department of Secondary Education, the University of Alberta; and the Hokkaido Board of Education  (with the grateful assistance of the Alberta-Japan Office in Tokyo). Participants in this initiative include teachers of English from all areas of Hokkaido. 

Program Components

2. The second component of HTEP takes place at Hokkaido Kyouiku Kenkyuusho - Hokkaido Education Research Institute ( DoKen) in Sapporo, Japan in June -July. It consists of three to four programs:

A. an orientation to b, c and d. below for native speaking Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs);

B. a 4-day mini English language, culture and pedagogy immersion for junior high teachers; 

C.  a 4-day mini English language, culture and pedagogy immersion for senior high teachers; and

D. a 4-day mini English language, culture and pedagogy immersion for elementary teachers.
